AI voice agent or an IVR menu, which should a small business use?
An IVR is a keypad tree. A voice agent speaks from a list and takes a message when the question is off that list. Which fits a Delhi shop depends on what the caller actually asks.
Use an IVR when callers already know which number to press. Use a voice agent when they ask hours, a fee, a table, or a slot in sentences, and you want those answers spoken from a list instead of a keypad tree.
A dental clinic in Green Park whose 11am line is “do you take walk ins” is not served by press 1. A restaurant in Sector 29 whose line is “table of four at 8:30” is the same shape. I sell the agent. I will still say when the tree you have is enough.
What an IVR actually is
IVR is a recorded menu. Press 1 for the desk. Press 2 for the kitchen. Press 9 to hear the hours again. It does not hear a question. It waits for a digit.
That is fine when the shop is large enough that each digit is a real room. It is a stall when the only room is you, mid filling, and the caller hangs up after the third prompt.
I will not invent how many callers hang up on menus in Delhi NCR. I have not counted them. Listen to your own week. If people already complain about the tree, believe them.
Keypad tree versus a spoken list, on two streets
Stand at the Green Park clinic for one morning. The line is a spoken list already. “Do you take walk ins.” “Is the doctor in after lunch.” “How long is a cleaning.” Those sentences do not map to press 1, press 2, press 3 unless you invent a tree nobody will remember. The keypad waits. The caller repeats themselves to a recording. A spoken list can answer those three from text you already wrote, then take a number when the question is a medical detail you would never publish.
Stand at the Sector 29 restaurant on a Friday. “Table of four at 8:30” is also a sentence. Press 1 for reservations only helps if a person then picks up. If that person is plating, the digit is a delay. The agent can hold the time, the party size, and a callback. If your callers already stab 1 because they have done it for years, keep that digit. I will not rip out a tree people already know how to use.
The split is not “modern versus old”. The split is digit versus sentence. Write the last ten calls. Mark each one. That card picks the tool.
What the agent actually is
An AI voice agent sits on the business number. It says it is an assistant. It speaks timings, directions, prices and bookings from a list you wrote. Off the list, it takes a number and a message. It never sends anyone to voicemail. You get the transcript.
What an AI voice agent is is the product in full. Receptionist or voice agent is the hire question. Pros and cons of AI voice calling is the hang up and the wrong list.
Floor Rs 25,000 on pricing. That is a build floor, not a monthly I hid, and not a salary.
How to pick without a demo reel
Write the last ten calls on a card.
- Digit they already know. Keep the IVR.
- A sentence you already answer every day. That is list work. The agent can hold it.
- A row, a complaint, a medical detail you would never put on a list. That stays a person. The agent must not guess.
If the card is mostly digits, I will tell you not to buy the agent from me. If the card is mostly sentences, the tree is the wrong tool, even if it was free on the plan.
Honest downsides of each
The tree is cheap and rigid. A new question means a new prompt, or it means they press 0 and wait for a person who is not there.
The agent is a build. A stale list will be spoken as truth. A few callers will hang up when they hear it is an assistant. I cannot give you that share. I have not surveyed every line in South Delhi.
Neither one fills a quiet road. Neither one fixes a page that never opens. People leave after three seconds on a site. The phone is a different hole.
What I will not tell you
I will not tell you IVR is dead. I will not tell you every restaurant must rip out press 1 this month. I will not tell you the agent books more tables than a menu. Count your own confirmations.
What to bring if the line is still the week
The card of ten calls, and whether a person already sits on the desk.
Send those ten lines. I will say keep the keypad, put the agent on the number, hire a person, or leave the phone as it is.
