What is a Google Business Profile and why does it matter more than a website?
The listing strangers open for hours and the pin. When it is enough, when a page is still the hole, and what Google's own guides actually say.
A Google Business Profile is the listing on Search and Maps that holds the name, the pin, the hours and the phone, which is the job Google’s add or claim page describes after you add and verify. For a restaurant in Sector 29 or a gym in Dwarka, that listing is often the first thing a stranger opens, and a website only starts to earn its keep when the pin cannot hold the fee table or the menu.
I will not tell you the listing always beats a site. I will tell you to fix the listing first when it is wrong, because a pretty page with last year’s Sunday still looks shut.
What the profile is for
Google’s add or claim page says customers can find the business on Search and Maps after you add and verify, and that you can add or claim at no charge. The edit page says you can update address, hours, contact and photos on a verified profile.
That is hours, the door, the number. It is not a colour menu. It is not a quarterly fee with three PT rules. I have not seen a listing hold those the way a page can. Keep the hours true anyway.
Do I need a website, or is the listing enough is the closer split. Why you are not showing on Google Maps is the invisible listing. The cheapest thing that actually works starts here.
A Sector 29 evening and a Dwarka pin
Walk the Sector 29 market on a Saturday. A diner opens Maps for “open now”, taps the hours, then taps the number. If Sunday still says last year’s Holi close, they never leave the sofa. That miss costs an evening of edits, not Rs 30,000. The kitchen can be full and the listing can still look shut.
A gym near Dwarka Mor had the opposite hole. Hours were true. The pin sat on the wrong tower. Trials arrived at the neighbouring lobby and left. The site was fine. The map was the week. I will not tell you a new page would have moved that pin. Open the listing on your own phone, on the street, before you buy files.
Photos on the listing help someone recognise the door. They do not hold a quarterly fee with three PT rules, or tonight’s thali list. If the week is “are you open” and “where is the lift”, the profile is the job. If the week is a price they will not type into a DM again, the listing has already done its part and the hole is a page.
When I sit with owners, many strangers never tap a URL. They read the hours, they tap the number. Fix those two before you argue about a theme.
Google’s local ranking notes (answer 7091) treat the pack as relevance, distance and prominence, and they state that a better local place is not something you can buy or petition for. Complete, accurate information still makes a profile more likely to show. A site does not buy that rank either.
One profile, the name on the signage. The representation guidelines ask for that. Do not add a second profile to “beat” the gym down the road.
When the site is still the hole
Someone wants the quarterly fee without a DM. Someone wants tonight’s menu. Someone wants a Saturday colour price. If that is the week, a page that opens is the job. Floor Rs 30,000 on pricing. Usually under two weeks for a site.
People leave after three seconds. A listing that sends them onto a 2.4 MB theme has made the site worse than no site. I timed nine clinic pages at 8.8s in the middle. That set is clinics, not gyms. I will not paste it as yours. The phone test is still the test.
What I will not tell you
I will not tell you how many extra tables a correct listing brings. I will not tell you to skip a site forever. I will not tell you verification makes you “more likely to show” unless I am citing the page that says that, and the verification page I use elsewhere is about ownership and the right to edit hours.
What to do tonight
Open the listing on your own phone. Today’s hours. The number that rings. The pin on the right floor. Then decide if a page is even the next spend.
Then get in touch if the listing is true and people still have no page for fees. Bring the listing URL and the site URL, if any. I will name a figure for the page, or I will tell you the pin already holds the week.
