Can I keep my existing phone number with an AI receptionist?

Yes, by forwarding the number on your board. The caller still dials that number. A second line is only for the cases forwarding cannot cover.

Yes. You keep the number on the board by forwarding that line to the agent, and the caller still dials the number they already have.

I will not invent what every handset then displays as a name. Operators differ. The promise is the dial, not the screen art.

The number on the board stays the number

A dental clinic in Green Park and a salon in Greater Kailash already printed a number on the glass, the card, and the listing. Losing that number is the fear. The AI voice agent does not need a new public number to do the job. It needs the ring.

Forwarding is the boring path. The SIM or the landline you already pay for sends the unanswered ring, or every ring, to the agent. The caller typed the old digits. That is the product.

How a dental clinic stops missing calls is the chair week. Nobody picks up the phone is the same hole without the number question. This page is only whether the printed digits can stay.

The published voice floor is Rs 25,000 on pricing. That floor is the build. If the agent needs a paid number in your name, that line is named before I start. The monthly cost post already treats that paid number as one of three running bills.

What the caller sees, and what I will not invent

They dial the number on the board. That sentence I can stand behind.

What their phone then writes as a label depends on the operator and on whether they saved you as a contact. I will not invent a rule that every Airtel and Jio handset shows the same words. I will not invent that forwarding is invisible on every network in Delhi NCR.

Test it. Call the board number from a second phone. Hear the agent. If the test fails, do not reprint the cards. Fix the forward, or we talk about a second line.

When forwarding fails

If the forward is off, the ring behaves like today. It dies, or it hits the person who still holds the handset. The agent cannot catch a call that never reached it.

If the prepaid balance on that SIM is gone, the forward is gone. That is still your SIM. I will not babysit a recharge I cannot see.

If the landline host changes a setting and nobody notices, Saturday dies the same way a stale listing dies. Someone in the shop has to own that setting. I will show you where it lives. I will not sit on the operator account so you never look.

Where the recordings go is the log after a call that did connect. A failed forward leaves no log, because there was no talk.

When a second number is the honest path

A second number is needed when the operator cannot forward, or will not forward in a way we can test.

A second number is needed when the SIM on the board is also a personal WhatsApp you will not share with a tool. Keep the personal chat. Put the shop ring on a line that can be forwarded. I will not force a family chat onto a receptionist.

A second number is needed when you want the agent on a dedicated line so you can still pick up the old handset yourself during a quiet hour. That is a choice, not a default. I will not sell a second line to make the first meeting look complete.

The monthly voice post already says the paid number, if the agent needs one, is a bill in your name. This page is when that “if” is real.

Downsides of keeping the old digits

You still depend on the operator who carries that SIM or landline. Ownership of the agent does not replace ownership of the line.

People who saved an old personal number that is not the board number will still call the wrong digits. Forwarding cannot fix a card you never printed.

A salon that forwards every ring and then stands next to a silent handset will feel like the shop went dead. The work moved. Tell the floor. The agent is not a secret.

I will not tell you forwarding raises bookings by a figure I cannot see. The gain, if there is one, is the ring that used to die during a filling or a colour. Count last week’s missed rings. That count is yours.

Test the forward before you change the listing

Call the printed number from a phone that is not in the shop. Hear the first sentence. Confirm it says it is an assistant. Confirm a fee question gets the fee you wrote.

If that test passes, you can keep the listing, the glass, and the visiting card. If that test fails, stop. Bring the operator setting, not a wish for a new brand number.

Then get in touch. Bring the number on the board and one failed test, if you have one. I will say forwarding is enough, a second line is the job, or the hole is still a person you should hire.

The ones people actually ask.

Does the caller have to save a new shop number?

No, if forwarding from the number on the board is working. They dial what they already have. I will not invent what every handset then shows as the name.

What if the forward fails during a busy hour?

The ring dies the same way it dies today when nobody picks up. I will not hide that. Test the forward before you print a new card.

When do I actually need a second line?

When your operator cannot forward, or when the SIM on the board is also a personal chat you will not share. Those two cases need a line I will name before work starts.
