Do chatbots keep customers better than a phone call?
Chat and a phone call do different jobs. Neither keeps a customer if the usual question sits until morning.
A phone call keeps the person who wants a voice. Chat keeps the person who writes at midnight and will not wait for morning. They close different holes, not one scoreboard.
I cannot say chat keeps customers better than a phone call. I will not invent a retention rate that picks a winner.
They close different holes. A dental clinic in Green Park loses the patient who rang through a filling and heard nothing. A gym in Dwarka loses the person who asked for the quarterly fee at 10pm and got silence until the morning trainer opened the app. I will not invent a retention rate that makes one of those look like the winner.
Not a contest with a winner
A phone call is a voice in the ear. Chat is a line of text you can send while you are on a bus. Some people will only do one of those. Some will try both in the same evening. Treating them as a scoreboard is how you buy the wrong thing and still miss the week.
I have not measured every shop in Delhi NCR for who stays after a bot versus who stays after a receptionist. I cannot give you that figure. Anyone who quotes one is guessing, or selling a deck. The honest test is your own week: where do the usual questions already arrive, and where do they die.
If the pile is WhatsApp after 9pm, a missed call is not the first problem. If the pile is the clinic phone during a root canal, a website widget will not save that hour. Are chatbots actually useful is the other side of the same honesty. People close a bot that loops. People also hang up on a line that never picks up.
The night questions
Night questions are almost always the same three. Price. Timings. Do you take walk ins. A gym trial, a salon chair, a Saturday slot at the clinic. Those should not sit until morning. Chat is built for that pile.
The AI chatbots work is chat on the site and on WhatsApp that reads your prices, timings and services and answers from those. Off-list questions come to you as a thread, not a loop. Chat starts at Rs 15,000 on pricing. Floor, not a quote, and not a promise that chat will keep more people than the phone.
WhatsApp or a website chatbot is the next choice if writing is already the pile. Start where the messages already are. If nobody uses the site, a site widget is a toy, and it will not beat a phone call because it will not be seen.
When a call still wins
A call still wins when the person wants a voice. A patient who is in pain will tap the number, not type a paragraph. A parent who wants a counsellor will not be satisfied by a fee list. A diner who wants a table for six with a Jain note during service will often call the reservation line.
That is the job on the AI voice agents page. A voice agent sits on the business number, talks like a calm receptionist, and says it is an assistant before it answers. Hours, the door, a price, a slot: those come from your list. Odd calls become a note to you. It never sends anyone to voicemail. Voice starts at Rs 25,000, again a floor on the same pricing page.
Whether you want a person or that agent on the line is a different comparison. Receptionist or an AI voice agent is that page. I will not pretend chat wins that argument. Chat cannot keep the person who refused to type.
A call also wins when two people need to look at the same diary and the rule is not written down. A bot that books a slot you cannot honour is worse than a missed ring. The call at least ends with a human who can say they are full.
What neither one keeps
Neither chat nor a call keeps a customer if the usual question sits until morning. That is the sentence I will stand on. A receptionist who is at lunch, a trainer on the floor, a dentist gloved up: the hole is the hour nobody answers. Filling that hour with the wrong tool still leaves the hour empty.
I will not tell you that adding chat raised anyone’s membership renewals by a number I made up. I will not tell you that a voice agent kept more patients than a second receptionist. A booking after either channel still follows the area, the reviews, the hours, and whether someone still answers the leftover thread.
If you already answer in one line, on the phone and on WhatsApp, before the person has gone, you may not need either. I will tell you that on the call.
What to pick for your week
Write down where the usual questions die. If they die in chat at midnight, start with chat. If they die on the ringing phone, start with the line. If they die in both, start with the louder hole, ship that, then talk about the next. I will not sell chat plus voice as a tidy pack.
Then get in touch. Say whether the pile is chat at midnight or the ringing phone. Hours, Monday to Saturday.
