Do I lose control of my website if someone else builds it?

You lose control when the domain, the host and the files stay in their name. How to keep those three, and what I put in yours.

You lose control when the domain, the host and the files stay in the builder’s account. A gym that cannot change Sunday hours without a ticket, or a restaurant whose menu file lives in someone else’s Wix login, already lost it, whether the invoice said custom or not.

On a build I do, those three go in your name. That is the product, not a favour at the end.

What control actually is

Control is not a feeling about the colour. Control is three logins you can open.

  • Domain registrar, on an email you own.
  • Hosting, on a card you own.
  • The files, in a place you can copy.

Can I cancel or move away later is the exit. How to choose a website developer is the hire question that should have caught this. Freelancer, agency, or a website builder is who you are handing those logins to.

A builder skin can still be under your account. WordPress on hosting in your name can still be yours. Custom work in their Github, on their host, billed as “maintenance” is the usual lock.

How shops lose it without noticing

They pay a cheap theme. The “company email” is the builder’s. Two years later the builder is gone. The domain expires on an address nobody reads. The restaurant looks shut on a Saturday it is open.

They never ask what happens if the monthly stops. The page dies. The Instagram looks alive. Walk-ins read the dead page and leave.

I have no count of how many Delhi shops are locked out of their own registrar. Open the three logins this week. If you cannot, you do not have control, whatever the contract title said.

What I will not tell you

I will not tell you only custom sites can be owned. I will not tell you a builder always steals the domain. I will tell you to look at the names on the accounts.

I will not tell you control raises enquiries. Control lets you fix hours. Whether anyone then books still sits with the area, the reviews, and whether a person replies.

Websites start at Rs 30,000 on pricing. Floor for a fast, mobile first site. Usually under two weeks for a site. The ownership is part of that handover, not an add-on I invoice later.

A restaurant in Khan Market that can change tonight’s shut line without waiting for a studio in another city is the test. If you have to send a WhatsApp and hope, you are a tenant. Tenants get evicted when the monthly stops, or when the person who held the password leaves for a job in Pune.

Ask for the registrar email on the call, not after the launch party. A person who hedges on that question is telling you where the names will sit.

Downside of holding the logins yourself

You will see a hosting bill. I name it before I start. I will not invent the rupees. You can also break the hours if you edit without care. That is the cost of being able to edit.

A gym owner who changes the colour of every heading at midnight can also hide the fee by mistake. Control includes the right to make a mess. Keep a copy before you poke. I will show you where the copy lives. I will not sit on the account so you never have to look.

Ask the current builder for a zip of the files this week, even if you stay with them. A zip you can open is proof. A promise that “everything is backed up on our side” is not proof.

Downside of leaving them with someone else: you are fast on day one and stuck on day four hundred.

What to do this week

Try to log in. Three places. Write down who owns each. If any line is blank, that is the brief.

A zip you can open this week is still the shortest proof that the files can leave with you.

Then get in touch if you want those three lines read back. Bring screenshots of the accounts you can open, and the ones you cannot. I will say keep the builder, move the names, or leave the page alone.

The ones people actually ask.

If you build it, whose name is on the domain?

Yours. The domain, the hosting and the code go in your name. Mine should not be.

What if my current builder will not hand over the login?

That is already lost control. Ask once in writing. If they refuse, you are renting a page, and a rebuild may be the only exit.

Does control mean I never message anyone?

No. You still write when hours change. Control means you can change them, or you can leave with the files.
